How to Choose the Perfect Topper



Food is the one thing that makes different people come together and sweets are the best comfort food for most people. If you love baking and you consider this not just a passion for food but an outlet for your artistic side, then cake decorating is as important to you as making the exact measurements to come up with the perfect cake. Making edible cake toppers is an essential part of baking a cake.

There are many edible materials that you could use to make the cake topper that it may sometimes seem that there is no limit to your creativity. Here are the list of materials that you can use as toppers and how you can use them to make that cake extra special.

  1. Fruits. The most common types of fruits used as toppers are berries, citruses, and apples. Fruits have vibrant colors that make a simple cake look extra special. Bakers usually coat the fruits with clear sugar syrup to prevent them from spoiling and to make sure that they have that extra gloss when they are sitting on top of the cake. The look good in plain colored cakes used for not specific but special occasions.
  2. Candy. You can use candy toppers when you want different flavors on top of your cake. You can use them to mold the icing and make then stand. Candies usually come in round, oval, or square shapes. There are also candy sprinkles that add color to your cake.
  3. Sugar icing. Sugar icing is like clay, only they are edible and are made of sugar. The baker needs to apply a small heat on the sugar icing to soften it up and shape it. Sugar icing is usually used for crafting human cake toppers. They may also be used to replace real fruit toppers if the cake is going to be on display for several days.
  4. Gum paste. This has the same characteristics as the sugar icing but it is softer, making it easier to mold.
  5. Chocolate. Everybody loves chocolate. They may be shaped by using cookie or dough cutters and colored by edible paint.
